Mentality: The best mentalities to use when playing this game is:
1. Don't care about the outcome of the game
The reason why I say this is because second guessing is the worst thing you can do on this game and everyone does it. Sure, changing reads over the course of the game is good if there is a just reason to, but arbitrarily changing them on the last day after a reread just because something doesn't sit right in your stomach is the worst thing you can do. If you care too much about the outcome of the game you will second guess, then third guess, then often get it wrong. If you have a read on a player who you think is maf all through the game and he's in the final 3 with another town, vote that guy. Unless he does something incredibly towny or the other guy scumslips, there's no justification to change your read just because you get cold feet.
2. Act like you are the best player on the site (especially in competitive)
You need to be assertive, sometimes arrogant when presenting your reads and when questioning a player. You cannot show fear in this game either, or players will exploit that. Most experienced players on the game and all the best players act like total cunts in game. Most are that way anyway but it's a persona they use in order to win the game. They don't show fear; infact other players may fear them and that may cause that player to either follow one of their lynches, or lynch the other guy in fear of disapproval. Also remember, as a town, you are everyone's enemy.

Scumtells (will update this list as I go):
NOTE: These phrases don't mean that this person is scum 100%. Of course town can say these lines. However, the mafia are more likely to say them. Also another thing to note is that a town PR will often play the same way as a mafia; they both don't want to be discovered and both have something to hide. So whilst a mafia may say some of these lines, a town PR may do so too.
1. Complaining about the speed of the bw.
This is something maf does a lot. If a bw vote stalls, or someone isn't self voting or crossing, someone may point out that the bw has stalled. This is often mafia. This is because mafia want to enter the night phase as quickly as possible and are panicking that there is a delay to the day and a possible change to the choice of the lynch.
2. Saying irrelevant things (usually at the start of the game).
Mafia are always treading on eggshells and are careful about what they want to say. You can sometimes get a good indication on whether someone is town or mafia just based on the start of the day one. Why? Because mafia feel that they need to say something in order to erase any suspicion, but are often nervous of what to say. So instead of starting a BW or suspecting someone off the bat like a town might do, they may start off by saying something that has no bearing on the game or even go off in a tangent about irrelevant things. Starting with a quote is also a scumtell for the same reasons.

voltrons alright, a bit too townsided but it's not awful. The variant Who Watches The Watcher I think is more balanced (we should give it a try sometime).
Basic variant is the best and most balanced setup IMO. I also like Hollywood illusions, that's a fun setup.
Worst setups - fancy pants, guns and hookers, cocos. All heavily townsided setups which seldom require scum hunting to win the game and instead rely on luck or game mechanics. Any setup where the game can be won in the first day is awful. None of these are fun either tbh, classic mafia is a much better setup.
